Harlem, New York City:  The Alex Adam Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition She Depicting Her, A Woman’s Perspective featuring five (5) women artists challenging the outdated perspective of the male artist’s gaze that has informed and defined much of our shared vision of a woman.  Eleanor Adam, Liz Adams-Jones, Janet A. Cook, Leah Lopez and Orly Shiv are each other’s model as they depict one another in paintings, drawings and sculptures.

The artists/models combine their considerable skills as artists with a sensitivity and empathy that is uniquely feminine.  As women artists in a field traditionally dominated by men, the artists bring a fresh perspective of what constitutes contemporary portraiture.  By changing this traditional relationship of the male artist towards the female model, these artists/models have produced an authentic collaborative experience.  They describe their studio time together as creating a common language and a process of respect and appreciation allowing for new perspectives.  The model becomes fully engaged with the artist as she provides her with suggestions of poses or critique of the piece in progress.  The artist reciprocates, not with a rhetorical gaze, but with an understanding of free flowing shared experiences.

Eleanor Adam’s charcoal drawings are rich in technique capturing the delicate and subtle countenance of one’s life and history.  The “in - your - face” close-cropped portraits by Liz Adams-Jones are reminiscent of a dramatic film still.   Janet A. Cook’s traditional painting style is juxtaposed by her use of imagery from old masters to modern day advertising, graffiti and body art.  Playing dress-up or daydreaming of a past life, Leah Lopez’s models are reflective and assured in their current presence.  The only sculptor in the group, Orly Shiv’s figures are solid and stoic, but with an openness that engages the viewer. All the artists met at the famed Art Students League in NYC where they shared their creative inspirations and individual perspectives.
